What does a condenser microphone sound like?

I've seen people use them as an overhead mic for recording a drum set, but what do they sound like? Why not just use an SM57?

I'm looking for a good condenser Microphone and Am Looking for Suggestions?

I am considering buying the MXL 990 Condenser Microphone for vocals. I have looked at a couple microphones, and don't know which one would be best. If you guys can recommend some good mics, or let me know if that mic is decent for the price around please let me know. That's about my price range right now.
