recording studio?

I songwrite and record at a studio to get my complete songs on disc. This is making me broke! Does anyone have there own home recording equipement that produces a pro sound? What is your set up, and what exactly do you use?

I would suggest you, if you are on a budget, look at the Portastudio style devices – the digital 8 track and 12 track recorders. These usually have XLR inputs and phantom power that would let you use a condenser mic. Fostex, Tascam and others sell equipment of this kind.

In terms of microphones, get a condenser for singing and delicate instruments, and get a Shure 58 for singing and other instruments. You can play the bass or keys directly into a digital recorder with an unbalanced cable, but for a guitar, you want some sort of pre-amp with amp modeling, like the Korg or POD footpedals.

In terms of the room itself to record in – you need to deaden the room if you are recording vocals. You can make a cheap vocal booth by making a frame and hanging thick blankets around it. That will baffle the sound sufficiently for a demo.
